People who are unable to produce sufficiently mature blood cells to fight off life-threatening infections or carry oxygen through the body may be suffering from a devastating category of diseases collectively called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) and numerous types of blood anemia fall into the MDS category.
While MDS can form inside the body without external causes, prolonged exposure to benzene -- typically in industrial, workplace settings-- is considered a contributing factor to developing the disease.
If you or a loved one is suffering from Myelodysplastic Syndrome as the result of benzene exposure or another cause, you may have legal rights to be financially compensated for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost income and other damages. The attorneys at Mark & Associates, P.C., will aggressively represent you and your family to achieve the best possible legal outcome in your case. MDS is a group of diseases that affects blood-forming cells inside bone marrow. In people afflicted with MDS, the marrow is unable to produce enough healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and blood platelets. The maturing blood cells may die in the marrow before they reach maturity and be released into the blood, leading to dangerously low blood-cell concentrations and an inability to battle infection.
Most of the time, MDS has no external cause. However, prolonged exposure to certain toxic substances, such as benzene, cigarette smoking and the use of drugs to treat tymphoma, myeloma and other forms of breast and ovarian cancer are believed to increase the risk of developing MDS. Recent restrictions placed on the use of benzene in the workplace have reduced the chemical’s link to some diseases and disorders; however, it remains a factor in MDS.
