Myelodysplastic Syndrome Diagnosis Raised by Exposure to Benzene

MDS disorders typically appear inside the body for no apparent reason, with no traceable link to causes outside the body. However, the syndrome has been linked to several risk factors that likely cause the disorder to form. The factors that appear to increase the chance of contracting MDS include:

  • Prior cancer treatments, most commonly the chemotherapy drugs mechlorethamine, procarbazine and chlorambucil
  • Past stem cell transplant procedures that were followed by high doses of chemotherapy drugs
  • Long-term exposure to benzene, an industrial chemical commonly used in gasoline, detergents, cigarettes, furniture polish and other products
  • Exposure to heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers

Risk factors

Factors and activities that can increase the risk of developing MDS include:

Age

People over age 60 are the most susceptible to MDS. Children and young adults rarely develop the condition, unless they have undergone chemotherapy treatments for cancer. Older adults are increasingly developing MDS.

Gender

Men are slightly more likely to develop MDS than are women.

Smoking

Because benzene and other cancer-causing substances are found in cigarettes, smoking increases a person’s risk of developing MDS. It is still unclear whether secondhand smoke poses the same risks.

Congenital Diseases

Certain congenital diseases are thought to increase the risk of developing MDS. Fanconi's anemia, a rare genetic disorder, Down syndrome, and other birth defects may also make people more susceptible to bone marrow disorders.
