Myelodysplastic Syndrome: Prevents Formation of Healthy Blood Cells

Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) limits our ability to create healthy blood cells, which are important to our bodies’ ability to fight off life-threatening infections and complications. About 10,000 to 15,000 Americans are diagnosed with MDS each year. Although MDS can affect people of any age, more than 80% of cases are in people over age 60 and the disorder is more common in men than in women.

Symptoms of MDS

Most often, MDS does not result in noticeable symptoms until the level of healthy blood cells within the body has fallen to a dangerously low level. When they do appear, symptoms of MDS can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusual paleness (pallor) due to anemia
  • Easy or unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Pinpoint-sized red spots just beneath your skin caused by bleeding (petechiae)
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Frequent infections

Diagnosing MDS

Doctors examine samples of blood and bone marrow to diagnose MDS, looking for changes in the chromosomes of bone marrow cells (cytogenetics). The disorder can be difficult to diagnose and require extensive study of blood and bone marrow samples to differentiate MDS from other diseases with similar symptoms, such as anemia.

MDS Treatment Options

No effective method of treating MDS exists, leaving doctors to focus on reducing complications of the disease. In some cases involving young patients, a bone marrow transplant may be a possible treatment option.
